The Uriel E. Owens Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Midwest

The Uriel E. Owens Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Midwest is a Kansas City-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease (SCD).

Established in 1981 in memory of Uriel Owens, a civic leader who, despite suffering from SCD, made significant community contribution, the organization continues his legacy by providing vital services to the local community.

The association offers a range of support services, including emergency financial assistance for utilities, prescriptions, and food; educational scholarships for students with SCD; public education through health fairs, workshops, and one-on-one counseling; and medical referral assistance. All funds raised remain local, benefiting patients throughout the greater Kansas City area and the state of Kansas. The organization also advocates for increased awareness and research into SCD, aiming to improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease. Through its comprehensive services and community engagement, the association plays a crucial role in addressing the needs of the SCD community in the Midwest
