ICHOM is collaborating with the Journal of Patient Experience (JPX) on a Special Collection exploring the relationship between patient experience, patient-reported outcomes and value-based healthcare — and we are inviting contributions from across the global healthcare community.

Why this matters

Healthcare systems around the world are increasingly focused on improving outcomes while delivering more sustainable, equitable and patient-centered care. Yet patient experience, patient-reported outcomes and value are still often measured and considered separately.

This Special Collection aims to bring these areas together, showcasing how healthcare organizations and teams are translating these principles into real-world practice and using them to improve care, organizational performance and, most importantly, the outcomes that matter to patients.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for contributions that demonstrate practical approaches, implementation strategies, innovative thinking and measurable impact across patient experience, outcomes and value-based care.

Areas of interest include:

• Measuring what matters – including the implementation and use of PROMs and PREMs, patient-centered performance measurement, benchmarking and standardized outcome measurement.
• Improving care through experience and outcomes – including care redesign, shared decision-making, patient and family co-design, health equity, care coordination and clinician-patient partnerships.
• Advancing value through innovation – including digital collection of PROMs and PREMs, artificial intelligence, remote monitoring, clinical decision support and technology that strengthens patient engagement.
• Leading sustainable systems of care – including leadership, organizational culture, workforce well-being, value-based payment models, education and approaches to scaling and sustaining value-based care.

We welcome original research, implementation studies, quality improvement initiatives, patient and caregiver perspectives, and expert insights. Contributions should offer clear relevance to patient experience, healthcare delivery or implementation.

The collection is open to clinicians, researchers, healthcare leaders, patient experience professionals, quality and safety experts, educators, policymakers, patients, family members, caregivers and interdisciplinary teams.

The submission deadline is June 30, 2027, with manuscripts accepted at any point before the deadline and successful articles published online on a rolling basis following peer review and acceptance.

Accepted manuscripts will receive a 50% discount on the Article Processing Charge (APC).

We encourage members of the ICHOM community who are advancing patient-centered outcomes and value-based healthcare in practice to share their experiences, evidence and learning through this Special Collection.
