About the Certificate Program

From the world’s leading experts in high-value health care, ICHOM brings you a unique opportunity to build outcome measurement and transformation skills.

Developed by faculty behind Dartmouth College’s Master of Health Care Delivery Science and the University of Texas at Austin’s Master of Science in Health Care Transformation programs, the certificate program uses cases and implementation frameworks that have been demonstrated to equip participants with actionable skills and insights.

While the program is rooted in the concepts of Michael Porter and Elizabeth Teisberg’s groundbreaking 2006 book, Redefining Health Care, it goes far beyond theory and deeply into the practice of high-value transformation.

The program is designed for a broad spectrum of experienced health care professionals and participants who will benefit from the multiple perspectives represented in each cohort.

The certificate program consists of five Master Classes, the content of which builds from class to class. Each class lasts 3 weeks and requires approximately 10 hours of time commitment.

Each class involves three components:

Independent Learning

Each Master Class begins with self-guided learning that enables participants to efficiently discover key aspects of high-value health care implementation and create a shared basis for the Roundtables. These resources include video lectures, proprietary implementation frameworks, articles, and other learning assets that participants can review at their leisure and their own pace.

Roundtables (Leadership Discussions)

Each Master Class has two live, Zoom-based interactive discussion sessions facilitated by the program’s award-winning faculty. These 90-minute discussions center around a case study of a successful health care transformation. Participants can immediately begin applying their insights and practicing the skills needed to transform health care and meet other participants who share their experiences and aspirations.

Reflection

Each Master Class will conclude with a reflection or application exercise bolstering the participant’s skillset. This exercise provides an opportunity for participants to reflect on their newly developed skills and insights, and to get feedback from faculty.

Schedule

The program is structured in cohorts, each lasting approximately 15 weeks. The first cohort will begin in January 2025. Additional cohorts will be added and announced soon.

Successful health care transformation requires dramatic improvement in individuals’ and families’ health care outcomes achieved for the money spent. Participants will learn how to center patients in a fundamental way using the proprietary Experience Group® research methodology, and how better health outcomes can take costs out of the health care system.

Measuring meaningful outcomes enables leaders to improve the health outcomes that matter most to individuals and families. It also unmasks unwarranted variations and disparities in care so they can be reduced. Using Teisberg and Wallace’s Capability, Comfort, and Calm framework, this Master Class teaches the fundamentals of outcome measurement, including how to begin implementing the ICHOM Measure Sets and analyzing data to accelerate learning by clinical teams.

Value in health care is created when health care solutions effectively address people’s health challenges and improve the outcomes that matter most to patients and families. With case examples focused on redefining chronic disease care for vulnerable patients, this Master Class teaches the essential elements of designing health solutions that close gaps in care and achieve outcomes that matter to patients.

Advancing value, the change in outcomes that matter most for the costs of achieving those outcomes, requires the ability to measure the outcomes that matter most to patients as well as the costs of that care solution. Likewise, moving beyond fee-for-service and global capitation reimbursement models requires the ability to construct viable bundled payment arrangements that align medical and financial success and support the professionalism of clinicians. This Master Class offers an introduction to time-driven, activity based costing and to key principles needed to construct durable bundled payment arrangements.

While most health care organizations have a strategic plan, relatively few have a clear strategy. Strategy encompasses the activities and trade-offs an organization chooses that enables it to serve the unique needs of its patients. This Master Class teaches participants how to build, assess, and improve strategy to enable the scaling of health care innovations that is necessary for delivering high-value health care for all. Participants discover how to create a value-based strategy that improves outcomes and enables growth and scaling of high-value solutions.
