Optimizing Digital Health Performance-based Contracts for Patient Outcomes

Better Outcomes, Smarter Spending: How EMC and Bupa Arabia Are Transforming MSK Care

Duration: 90 minutes

Measuring outcomes is now common practice in value-based healthcare. Paying for them is not. This webinar looks at what happens when a provider and a payer work from the same evidence to change not only how care is delivered, but how it is funded.

European Medical Centre (EMC), a CBAHI, ICHOM Level 1 and SRC Center of Excellence in Orthopedic and Spine Surgery, accredited provider in Jeddah, built an integrated practice unit for low back pain around the ICHOM Standard Set and now captures patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) across the full care pathway. Outcomes data alone, however, does not change how care is paid for. To understand where value is actually created along the patient journey, EMC costed that journey end to end using Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) — work that changed how its finance, costing, and pricing teams approach the numbers.

That combination of cost and outcomes evidence became the basis for a different conversation with Bupa Arabia: not the usual line-by-line negotiation over individual service codes, but a shared model for bundled payment linked to the outcomes that matter to patients. In this session, both organisations walk through what that took in practice — the benchmarks they had to build where none existed, the internal debates it prompted, and where the partnership goes from here.

What you will take away

  • How PROMs and clinical outcomes for low back pain are captured across the whole patient journey, rather than at a single point of care
  • How TDABC reveals the true cost of a care pathway, and why that reshapes the work of finance, costing, and pricing teams
  • How a provider and payer moved from service-code (feef or service) negotiation toward a bundled payment tied to outcomes
  • How to develop benchmarks and a defensible bundle price when little local reference point exists
  • Why payment design, not measurement on its own, is the lever that drives quality improvement
  • Practical ways to build provider–payer alignment around value in your own market
