Optimizing Digital Health Performance-based Contracts for Patient Outcomes

Member Exchange (exclusively for ICHOM Members)

From PROMs Collection to Measurement
Mass General Brigham

The Harvard-affiliated Mass General Brigham (MGB) health system operates one of North America’s largest Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) programs, with nearly 50 million responses collected since 2012. The program is now entering a critical phase as it aligns with the first U.S. public-payer value-based mandate tied to PROMs-measured performance: the PRO-PM for hip and knee arthroplasty patients aged 65+.

In this interactive workshop, leaders from MGB’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer will share how a large, complex health system prepared for and continues to adapt to these evolving requirements. Participants will learn how MGB engaged clinical, operational, and informatics teams to support PROMs performance, not just collection.

The session will include breakout and group discussions, creating opportunities for shared learning around current and emerging challenges tied to public and private payer mandates.

Presenters will:

  • Highlight why governance, workflow design, and sustained operational support are critical to PRO-PM success
  • Outline key process, people, and EHR decisions needed to operationalize PROMs at scale
  • Share lessons learned as U.S. healthcare moves toward publicly reported PROMs performance with financial implications

This workshop may be especially relevant for health system quality leaders, outcomes teams, and PROMs program managers looking for practical strategies to translate measurement into value-based performance.
