ICHOM and the EHDEN Academy have collaborated to launch a new course: Assessing healthcare using outcomes that matter to patients.
This ~60 minutes course, delivered by ICHOM’s Chief Scientific Officer Dr Neo Tapela, introduces principles of what outcomes that matter to patients are, how best to measure them including using ICHOM’s global standards of patient-centred outcome measure sets that are science-backed and co-developed with patients. The course also covers how data from standardized outcomes measurement can be used for various purposes, and considerations to be made in using the data for benchmarking purposes.
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Describe Value Based Health Care and the challenges it seeks to address
- Define “patient health outcomes,” and why they are important
- Explain how ICHOM facilitates standardization of measurement of patient health outcomes
- Outline key considerations in using patient health outcomes data for benchmarking
The course material also includes a brief self-assessment test.

Dr. Neo Tapela says “We are excited to partner with EHDEN on this new course which is crucial to understand patient outcomes and how ICHOM’s Sets of Patient-Centered Outcome Measures can be used globally. Furthermore we discuss how these evidence-based co-created resources empower patient and clinical leaders and how the data collected can be used to drive better patient care.”
The EHDEN Academy is free, used in more than 60 countries, and only requires a participant to set up an account and log in. You can enrol on the Academy via this link.
