Careops – Rik Renard, Partnership Lead, Awell.
Q: Tell us about yourself and what you do
I’m Rik Renard, a nurse turned into a startup operator. I’m currently the Partnership Lead at Awell, a no-code platform to design and improve clinical pathways.
For the past four years, I’ve implemented +25 care pathways (all based on ICHOM Sets of Patient-Centered Outcome Measures) at +15 care organizations ranging from oncology to musculoskeletal to cardiovascular diseases leading to improved outcomes such as 40% reduction in length of stay, 25% reduction in emergency room admissions and 50% increase in care team capacity.
In my spare time, I write and organize events for CareOps together with Thomas Vande Casteele. This is a community with +3000 healthcare operators where we focus on the tools and practices to build, operate and improve care processes.
Q: What’s coming up?
Thomas and I have only been working on CareOps for the last eight months and I can’t wait to see all our future events unfold. What excites me most is the conference we’re hoping to pull together early next year.
Q: Why do you believe value-based healthcare is important?
The combination of cost pressures, labour shortages and the rise of physician burnout make one thing clear: the way the current healthcare system is organized is driving us straight into the wall.
If the healthcare system wants to become sustainable, and care organizations want to succeed, they need to find ways to redesign care pathways and workflows from the ground up.
Successful companies will be those that can figure out how to scale and continuously improve care pathways faster, and better, than their peers. But the only way to get to such behaviour is to have a system in place that incentives better outcomes at lower costs, which value-based healthcare is all about.
Q: How can the ICHOM Community find out more?
