New study explores real-world use of the ICHOM Low Back Pain Set in Saudi Arabia
A new study from Tawuniya examines the real-world implementation of the ICHOM Low Back Pain Set within an insured population, offering practical insights into how patient-reported outcomes can be used alongside cost data to support value-based care.
The study analyses longitudinal PROMs and episode-of-care costs for 97 patients treated between August 2023 and March 2025, with follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months. Results show clinically meaningful improvements in pain, functional disability, and health-related quality of life over time, alongside notable variation in treatment costs.
Importantly, the findings highlight how patient characteristics such as BMI, education level, gender, and comorbidities are associated with outcomes, underscoring the importance of risk adjustment and sustained outcome measurement when applying standardized sets in practice.
By linking patient outcomes with cost data at payer level, the study illustrates how ICHOM Standard Sets can be operationalised beyond research settings to inform benchmarking, payment design, and system-level decision-making.
An accompanying poster summarises the study design, outcomes, and key implementation lessons, providing a concise visual overview of the findings.
