ICHOM is pleased to announce the publication of our Letter to the Editor in the Journal of Patient Experience (JPX).
This article highlights the need for Value-Based Healthcare to improve health outcomes that matter most to patients while controlling escalating costs. Importantly, the article also underscores the importance of balancing the more often used Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) to reach a holistic understanding of a patient’s health status and care journey and to comprehensively evaluate care effectiveness, with PROMs allowing for direct insights into patients’ well-being over time. Standardizing the measurement of patient-reported outcomes is described as key, with early adopters like the Martini Klinik in Germany and the Erasmus Medical Center commended for implementing ICHOM’s Sets of Patient-Centered Outcome Measures. Their transparent reporting of data demonstrates the impact of embracing standardized outcome measurement, with the authors calling for other providers to follow suit.
