Herb Riband is on a one-year DCI fellowship at Stanford University in Palo Alto CA starting in September 2018. The primary focus of his fellowship is on developing new approaches and technologies to enable innovative global health and healthcare delivery models. Specifically, he is working to generate insights, identify new solutions and make contacts that bring together innovation projects at Stanford and in the Silicon Valley with health system thought leaders from around the world. Prior to his Stanford fellowship, Herb had a diverse 31-year international career with leadership roles in biotechnology, medical technology, consumer goods, consulting and law. He built and led healthcare policy, government affairs, market access, strategic philanthropy, corporate communications and law functions for the international operations of multinational enterprises. From 2012 to 2018 Herb worked for Amgen, the California-based biotechnology leader. His last position was Vice President International Policy & Government Affairs, based in Switzerland, leading the company’s work in these areas outside of the United States. During this period he also led Amgen’s European market access, pricing and health economics activities, supporting the launch of five new medicines as well as the company’s existing portfolio. In 2014, Herb co-led the launch of Amgen’s Value Based Health Care program in Europe, which develops innovative “beyond the drug” healthcare delivery solutions and promotes healthcare policies focused on measuring and improving patient outcomes. Previously Herb spent 13 years based in Switzerland with Minnesota-based Medtronic in a variety of international leadership roles, including Vice President External Affairs International. He was responsible for government affairs, healthcare policy, market access and corporate philanthropy activities outside of the United States. In this capacity Herb coled innovative programs to engage healthcare systems and accelerate patient access to appropriate therapies, as well as the company’s global health engagement initiative focusing on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Prior to Medtronic Herb worked for Diageo plc (consumer goods), Ernst & Young (consulting) and Baker & McKenzie (law). A native of Philadelphia, Herb received advanced degrees from Cornell University and the University of Michigan Law School. He has served on the boards of the Medtronic Foundation and various industry associations. Herb is a citizen of the United States and Switzerland.
