
Maria Karsten trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany. After finishing her residency she went on to specialize in the treatment of breast cancer with a focus on breast surgery. After finishing her specialization in Germany she applied for a breast surgery fellowship through the American Society for Surgical Oncology. After a very competitive selection process she was awarded one of the four positions as a breast surgery fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Since 2016 she works as a senior attending at the Breast Cancer Center at Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin where she implemented PRO Measurements in routine care. In 2018 she became a Fellow of the Berlin Institute of Health to further develop PRO for breast cancer patients and splits her time currently between patient care and research.
